Biography
A native of Vancouver, Robert Turriff defines himself as primarily a sculptor. Robert’s current sculpture practice can be divided into two areas of interest, the first being object-based works with kinetic and or mechanical elements employing sensors, electronics, video, and sound. These object-based works deal with how human made systems interact with nature. Robert illustrates humankind’s disconnect from nature by questioning our relationship to the environment, and furthermore, to draw attention to the industrial processes of human society which are systematically disrupting the functionality of the earth's ecosystems.
His second area of interest involves creating sets where elaborate events take place. These sets are fabricated using the same techniques as found in the film industry. His installations push the gallery viewer into a participatory role. Robert transforms the gallery creating immersive and transportive spaces inducing playful interaction of the participants. These events are documented by video. In the future he will use the video documentation of an event to create
narratives specific to his installations.
